I was able to spend some time at an amazing place last weekend.

Scattergood Friends School is a small boarding college-prep high school in rural Iowa that nourishes their students with both progressive academics AND an organic farm that produces much of the food for the school.  How cool is that?!?  Youth from around the country and around the world live together in community with staff and teachers: working on crews, harvesting, learning both in and outside of classrooms, cooking meals, eating together, playing, creating, and developing both minds and hearts in a fertile environment.

The greenhouse is used to stretch the growing season providing greens for most of the year.

On their organic farm they raise pigs, sheep, cows, chicken, kale, beets, squash, corn, leeks, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet potatoes, salad, and loads more veggies to feed the school’s community.  From their website:

In an average year, the Farm provides Scattergood Kitchen with more than:

  • 1000 dozen eggs,
  • 5000 pounds of vegetables,
  • 99% of all meat served
  • Several tons of fruit

Of course in this cooking blog I’m focusing on the food and farm, but there is so much more….their Academics program is amazing: from sciences to the arts to humanities to athletics, they foster within the students the invaluable skill of learning how to learn.  Okay it’s true, I am biased because I went there….but don’t let that stop you from checking out this unique little gem of a school.  Will seven links to their site on this post be enough to get you to click?  We shall see.

Happy Halloween!
