Avocado Strawberry Salad
NOLA a.k.a. the Rebirth City.
I’m traveling with friends this week to New Orleans and Bay St. Louis, visiting friends and eating delectable dinners everywhere we go. Not much time for words so I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
A sweet morning on the porch while we visited my friend Beatriz who owns the Fairchild House B&B on Prytania in the Lower Garden District.
It was recommended we take the ferry across to Algiers and the Old Point Bar, so ferry we did. We walked along the river and noticed numerous trailers and semis clustered together full of lighting gear and sets. Arriving at our funky destination we found an post-apocalyptic mini-series being shot next door so we simply wandered our way through the leather clad Goth warriors and found a seat at the bar. I didn’t bother with photos of the stars but instead on the awesome machetes that are apparently still being used 500 years in the future. I guess I really am one of those cooks who has a thing about knives….and machetes.
I don’t even know where to begin about the food this week other than we’re eating mountains of it and it’s incredible. When there is a little down-time to process I’ll post some recommendations for Crescent City that I could call a home away from home. I’m not giving up the wintertime snow but this warmth of everyone we’ve met could be addictive!
A few words about the salad…
Avocados are without a doubt one of the most satisfying foods in the world: they are creamy, rich and go with nearly everything that I would want to eat. I include them in my list of Helpers and should probably write a post about them soon since I’ve been on an avocado binge lately.
Combine this silky greenness with fresh red strawberries and who needs anything more for a salad?
The next leg of our journey is to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi to farewell a dear friend. About 45 minutes from New Orleans, it’s a vibrant bayside town of artists and entrepreneurs and was the epicenter of Hurricane Katrina. This whole trip has been a witness to the ten year anniversary of the area’s long long road to rebuild and the undying spirit of this amazing community! More on this part later…
In the meanwhile enjoy this salad on backside of the Strawberry Full Moon!

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes
on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day,
listening to the murmur of water, or
watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time.”
