While wandering around Port Townsend we stumbled upon this 1917 ship which happened to be docked for one day only and full of a crew ready to give tours. They were from the Sound Experience, an organization working with youth interested in environmental sustainability and maritime careers. They sail to different locations in Puget Sound on the Adventuress using the ‘ship as a teacher’ in a hands-on setting and offer a number of programs including Teen Summer Programs and Apprenticeships. Check out their Sailing Calendar or Dockside Tour Schedule if you’re interested.

Lucky us to have found them the one day they were in Port Townsend!

Sleeping quarters with storage space below the beds and a stove for the chilly nights, not a cubic inch of space is wasted when you’re in small quarters. Ships are like van, trailer or tiny house living. I love that everything has a place and purpose, and you don’t squander the precious real estate on unnecessary clutter.

Someone practicing their ‘fancywork’ rope skills on the ladder. Macramé and other knot and rope work perfected by sailors were both utilitarian and ornate. If you’re going to be surrounded by something for 24/7 it might as well be beautiful.

Even the lifeboat is beautifully crafted.

These deck prisms are brilliant—installed throughout the deck of the ship, they illuminate the lower levels by refracting the sunlight spreading it farther than just a flat glass. It was amazing how light it was down below, one would think these could be used in homes like a solar tube.

  • Wow, those forests are amazingly gorgeous! I once walked into a forest that’s floor was covered in bluebells, it looked as if the trees were floating. Yess to more flowers in our food!
Haha – that shirt from Raygun holds a little too much truth ;-)
And My favorite from your favorites is Lisa Nichols!!
