Carrie O’s Yogurt Tahini Sauce

My friend and former housemate Carrie O used to often make a version of this dip to serve with a stir fry or other group dinners at our house. This was decades ago, so I’m leaning on a 30 year old memory to reenact whatever I can for the flavors and ingredients.

Our dining goals back then: good food, lots of garlic, cheap because we were often feeding numerous people, and to use things we had around. The garlic kept us healthy as we burned the candle at both ends, playing in a band at night and going to school or working in restaurants by day. There were a number of late-nights-post-show fried foods or tacos, but at other times we tried to eat things like vegetables. Inexpensive quantity was also important because you never knew who might show up around a mealtime, or who might end up sleeping on the couch for a few days (or more).

We would often serve this sauce with a broccoli-tofu stir fry which went well with the big-and-a-little-bitter flavor of the tahini, but also on eggs, tofu, or other veggies. This may not even be a finished thought of a recipe but it brings back fun memories and makes one think about what was big in ones’ lives during our teens and twenties. Those were good times in the urban northland of the Twin Cities, many dinners with friends then going to or participating in events—it was an age when we were out in the community more nights than not. We find we stay in more as the years go by, so we should enjoy that time of friends while it’s happening!
