Turmeric Lemongrass Tea

I’m a little under the weather today so have been enjoying numerous cups of this delicious and potent elixir.

When we think of turmeric we probably think of curry and the golden-orange brilliance it brings to many dishes.  This remarkable root has a bitter side with an earthy backbone that may be an acquired taste by itself, but when mixed with other flavors it takes everything to another level.  It is also known as Indian Saffron or Poor Man’s Saffron because of the saffron-like color produced when used as a fiber dye.

For centuries turmeric has been a powerhouse in the culinary and medicinal worlds of Asia.  Thanks to the active compound ‘curcumin’ it has been well known as a powerful yet safe anti-inflammatory, and check out the Worlds Healthiest Foods site for more information about how turmeric has been shown to help with boosting liver function, cancer prevention and treatment (especially colon/rectal cancer), relief from rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, IBS’s, dementia and more. And there it just sits in our cupboards!  So many amazing plants we can eat…

As with all potent herbs please use with care if you are pregnant or breastfeeding—I have read that it is fine to eat in foods but the supplements could be too strong for the little ones.

Lemongrass if one of my favorite flavors on earth and mixed with turmeric it is a match made in heaven. I’m fortunate to be able to buy it fresh but if you cannot find fresh you may be able to purchase it dried at specialty stores or online, or substitute in fresh lemon juice with zest.

Try one of the many other variations of turmeric tea—your liver will thank you!
