A few of my father’s photos from when he was learning the craft in the 1980’s.

The second picture is one of my favorites.  He was practicing moving the camera to match the subject so the background would be blurred…and it’s one great shot.  Yarrow and my sister are the two willing models.

Part of our old farmhouse basement was modified into a darkroom for his long-lived hobby, it was a cool space for him to hide out in the steamy summer days whilst the corn grew tall.  When they eventually retired and moved off the farm to a town condo (with real insulation!) he converted the new upstairs bathroom into a darkroom that now included color printing.  As long as there weren’t too many overnight visitors taking over that guest room dad could happily spend his days playing with the magic of chemicals and light.

It’s been highly entertaining going through dad’s prints and a tad overwhelming knowing there are numerous boxes of photos and slides yet to be rediscovered.  We tend to not appreciate documentation while it’s happening, that meddlesome person with the camera, but now I’m relishing the moments of time captured in his lens.  I suppose it would have been more timely to post photos of the flooding and collapsed roads in our area from last week’s rain deluge, but you can see that elsewhere…these horse-themed photos by Roy Hampton are a little distraction for anyone who might need one.

My sister and I in 1983 on Mesa del Campanero (Sonora, Mexico) right before we raced.  I don’t remember the names of the horses, but I do remember they were fast and didn’t want to stop.  The shadows look long so it must have been late in the day, a challenging time for taking photos but sometimes you just have to do what you can when things are happening…like when your daughters are racing unfamiliar horses on an unknown road.

It’s amazing we’re all still (relatively) intact.
