Thanksgiving Ideas

Union Stations, across the country they are some of the grandest of gathering halls still standing. Palatial and elaborate, they hail from an era when trains were the luxurious way to travel and give us a glimpse into the past.

Technically the term Union Station means a station where two or more railroad companies converge and share tracks and passengers can connect easily. To me they are a hub of intersecting lives and journeys, people traveling within a city, arriving at a city, or passing through a city connecting with another route. So much more relaxed than an airport—no TSA and in general people seem friendlier. And such a Common Purpose name: ‘Union Station’: a joined stopping place, an association of travelers, its very name means ‘coming together’. I like that notion.

Hanging out in Chicago’s Union Station, looking up at the Canal Street exit where the wind hits you with a gale force as you walk through the doors.

The ceiling and wall of a room off the Great Hall in Chicago, it was like a mini museum, a quiet space to wander. Much of the Great Hall was under construction and filled with scaffolding and tarps so it may take another trek to find out the full plan of the renovation. Check out this article for more about it.

Arriving at Washington D.C. Union Station I was welcomed by this church for travelers. Shops are attached to the main hall, making it easy to kill a few hours of layover. I realized later that the Metro train stations in D.C. somewhat mimic the look of this grandiose arched passageway.

Now to the food! Here are a few ideas for Holiday dishes if you’re looking for a twist on traditional fare, or maybe you haven’t yet thought about any of it and need a nudge of inspiration.

Safe travels!
